Workshop Kicks off West Virginia NASA Partnership

Dated Posted: Tue Feb 15 2011

The first event marking a new partnership between West Virginia's two NASA entities took place Feb. 12 with a workshop at the Educator Resource Center at the NASA IV & V Facility in Fairmont.

Dr. Debbie Denise Reese, senior educational researcher for the NASA-sponsored Classroom of the Future program at the Center for Educational Technologies, presented a 70-minute orientation to the MoonGazers suite of activities at the teacher professional development workshop “Afterschool Universe and Telescopes,” held in Fairmont.

MoonGazers is a package of virtual, game-based, and hands-on activities, highlighted by the MoonWorld virtual environment and the Selene videogame, both of which were created by the Classroom of the Future.

The Wheeling and Fairmont facilities announced in November that they are working together to present an instructional unit on lunar science. In addition to hosting workshops, the IV&V Facility will build the lunar science unit into its equipment loan certification training for its telescope kits. The partners plan to take their partnership model nationwide in 2011-2012.
