Poster Session Highlights Metaphor Research

Dated Posted: Wed June 13 2007

A researcher at the NASA-sponsored Classroom of the Future presented a poster presentation at Association for Psychological Science annual conference May 24-27 in Washington, DC.

Dr. Debbie Denise Reese, senior educational researcher at the Center for Educational Technologies®, which houses the Classroom of the Future™, is a coauthor on "Elaborated Metaphors for Enhancing Chemistry Learning.”

The authors say that metaphors can help students learn abstract science concepts. In this study subjects who read metaphors that were elaborated with graphics and text responded to chemistry questions with more targeted concepts than did subjects who read only the metaphors, suggesting that the elaboration facilitated the development of targeted relations.
